Breathe Easy: Respirator Fit Testing Guide
Your safety is our top priority. Some health care employees in clinical, hospital or research settings may be required to wear a tight-fitting respirator such as an N95 to help filter harmful particles and airborne hazards.
OSHA requires that you complete a fit test using the same make, model, style and size of respirator you’ll wear on the job. A fit test ensures your mask forms a secure seal on your face, providing the protection you need to keep you and your patients safe.
3 Steps to Complete Your Fit Test
Step 1: Complete this online medical questionnaire.
Wellness 360 will review your responses and either:
- Confirm your medical clearance, or
- Contact you with instructions if additional steps are needed.
Step 2: Schedule Your Fit Test
Once you have been medically cleared, you will receive a link to schedule your respirator fit test.
If you don’t receive the link or have questions, call 210-567-2955.
Step 3: Arrive Prepared for Your Fit Test Appointment
- Arrive clean-shaven around the respirator sealing surface. View the facial hair guide below.
- Bring your employee ID.
- Bring your assigned respirator model, if available.
What to Expect During Your Fit Test
During fit testing you may be asked to:
-Wear your specific respirator model
-Perform movements (talking, head turns, deep breathing)
-Verify comfort, seal and function
Important: Arrive clean-shaven. View the facial hair guide below. Facial hair that prevents a proper seal will prevent you from being fit tested.
